HISTORY
OF THE REGION OF BRIÑAS
Govantes , author of the ´Diccionario
Geográfico Histórico de la Rioja`(Geographic
and Historical Diccionary of the Rioja Province),
published in 1846, supports the hipothesis of
Briñas being the location of the old Roman
setting of Deóbriga, after Vindeleya period
(Today Foncea) in the itinerary of Anthony Augustus
from Astorga to Aquitaine.
The first known document , from the year 1047
a.D. is a document of donation by which Don Sancho
Fortúnez, was giving the village of Briñas
to the Leire Monastery. This heroic knight famous
for his performance at the Tafalla Battle against
Ramiro of Aragon, had received both assignments
from the king García of Navarre.
This village is mentioned again when the Navarre
kings Sancho of Peñalén and Placencia,
on the 3rd of July of 1072, donated the Tondon
village to the Salvador de Leire Monastery. Apparently
Briñas used to depend on Haro until the
17th century when it grew in population gaining
more rights until it became an independent town.
It was inscribed as Haro, in the dominions of
the Frias Dukes until manors and domains were
suppressed in 1811.
It used to be part of Burgos`Province until Logroño
Province was created (nowadays ´Rioja`).
(by the royal bill of law of the 30th of November
of 1833).
In 1834 in the month of March, over the socalled
bridge of Briñas, there were some confrontations
between the King Charles followers and the Liberal
Party followers. Near this bridge , nowadays there
is a monument in memory of the dead in that battle
